2022 Society Outings

25 March 2022 @ South Beds Golf Club

25 March 2022

South Beds Golf Club

Warden Hill Road, Luton, Beds LU2 7AE

Tel: 01582591500

Founded in 1892, on common land, with wattle sheep hurdles around the greens instead of bunkers, South Beds Golf Club gradually moved around the Galley and Warden Hills for the next eighty years until the current two-course complex materialised in the mid-1970s

The 18 hole par 71 Galley Hill course is never played in the same conditions as the wind sweeps down off the hills which provide the backdrop to this challenging course. The 9 hole par 32 Warden Hill course is the perfect golfing partner and shouldn't be underestimated as it provides full length par 3's & 4's to test new and experienced golfers alike.

Cost: £70 per head to include

Coffee/Tea/Bacon Rolls from 12:00 noon

18 holes golf and 3 course dinner

1st tee (flexible) start at 13:00

Marshalls: Joe Campbell & Kieran Guthrie

OUTING REPORT & WINNERS

This was our first outing on the 25 March and also the first time we have played at at South Beds Golf Club . There were 29 members and guests battling for the various prizes. The course was in very good condition but quite difficult in places. This was evidenced by the average low scores except for Joe Gallagher who ended up with an impressive 39 points. The catering facilities were first class especially the carvery which everyone enjoyed. The weather was dry and warm which helped to make the outing a most enjoyable day at our Captain's home club. There was a change of format in so far as there was no team competition but more prizes were available for the individual competition.  If members wish to make any comments please email the secretary.   The results are as follows:

  • 1st & Overall winner:   Joe Gallagher
  • 2nd:  Jack Sava  (First time in the prizes)
  • 3rd : Mike O'Brien
  • 4th:  John Sherry
  • 5th:  Peter  McGeever
  • Guest Prize:   Dan Shanahan
  • Nearest the Pin:  Peter McGeever

Marshalls: Pat Morrissey & Ross O'Malley

OUTING REPORT & WINNERS

Recently members have suggested we try new courses to add interest to the outings so this was the reason we chose Hendon which has always been regarded as a first class venue. There was good support with 33 members and guests attending.  A number of people thought the course was not in top class condition but it was still enjoyable and a challenging golf experience. Kieran Guthrie,  Michael O’Hara, Tom Biesty and John Sherry must all be congratulated for achieving their excellent rounds.     Gabriela Segal of the admin department through whom we made all the arrangements was always most helpful, also the pro shop in booking the buggies was very efficient. The bar service was excellent. On arrival the coffee/tea and bacon rolls were excellent but a number of members complained about the evening dinner saying the chicken and potatoes were a disgrace. This was such a disappointment to end the day

The results are as follows:

  • 1st    Kieran Guthrie 38 Points
  • 2nd   Mick O'Hara 36 Points
  • 3rd    Tom Biesty 35 Points CB
  • 4th   John Sherry 35 Points
  • Guest Prize Alan Cousins 31 Points
  • Best Front Nine Mick O'Brien 21 Points
  • Best Back Nine David Hawkins 18 Points
  • Nearest Pin 9th Hole Mick O'Brien
  • Longest Drive Tony Milne

A pleasant parkland course with mature trees and some beautiful water / lake  features.  This 6,266 yards, 18-hole golf course designed by renowned course designer Jack Nicklaus II offers multiple natural obstacles, designed to test players’ skills.

The first nine holes are gentle with only minor hazards. However  holes 10 to 18, are quite demanding and require the highest level of skill and accuracy  There are three water hazards surrounded by well-placed bunkers and the rough can be a real  problem.

Cost: £70 per head to include

18 holes golf and 2 course dinner

1st tee start from 12:30 to 14:00

The staff were always most co-operative and efficient in dealing with all our arrangements which helped to make it a successful day for everyone. The winners were as follows:

Old Fold Manor is a hidden gem in Hertfordshire.  It was designed by one of the greatest golf course architects of all time - Harry Colt. His design philosophy helped to shape Augusta National, too, so it’s not surprising that Old Fold is famous for its greens.

Colt was also famous for bringing a seaside links feel to inland courses so, you’ll find a few extra challenges here. These are some of the reasons why Old Fold held Regional Qualifying for The Open Championship from 2005-2010.

Cost: £70.00  per head to include

Coffee/Tea/Bacon Rolls from 11:30

18 holes golf and 2 course dinner

Sudbury golf course was designed by the legendary Harry Colt in 1920 and is as challenging as it is beautiful. The par of 70 will test the very best players but it can also be enjoyed by golfers of all abilities. It is a classic parkland design with rolling, tree-lined fairways and pulpit greens. Colt was a master of the short hole and Sudbury’s four Par 3’s are a testament to his skill as a designer.

Coffee/Tea/Bacon Rolls from 11:00

18 holes golf and 2 course dinner

OUTING REPORT & WINNERS

The London GAA Members Golf Society held their last outing of the year last Friday at the Sudbury Golf Club. It was sponsored by the Claddagh Ring of Hendon and was well supported by 28 members and guests who completed for the various individual prizes the results of which are given below. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Captain’s charity, The Neurology Brain Dept at UCL & Marie Curie Hospice Nurses.

The well established golf course, designed by the legendary Harry Colt in 1920, is set in parkland with tree lined fairways. The course was in excellent condition providing a challenging test for everyone especially when playing the very interesting short par 3’s. It is difficult to believe that such a beautiful setting is so near all the nearby skyscrapers of Wembley and not to mention the canal running by the side of one of the fairways with all the houseboats. It all adds up to a memorable round of golf so different to the usual courses.

The catering was excellent starting with bacon rolls and coffee on arrival followed by a three course roast dinner after eighteen holes of golf. During the presentation of the prizes Peter McGeever (Captain) thanked all the staff who were always most co-operative and efficient in dealing with all our arrangements which helped to make it another successful day for everyone.

The results were dominated by past winners in particular Mike O’Brien, Johnny Sheehan and Mike Steer. The Golfer of the Year competition was awarded to our Captain,  Peter McGeever who consistently scored well in most of the six outings during the year. It is the first time it has been won my one of our captains

The results were as follows:

  • Winner - Pat O’Rourke 40 points on count back
  • 2nd       - Mick O’Brien 40points
  • 3rd.       - Brendan Breen 38 points
  • 4th.       - Johnny Sheehan 36 points
  • Guest Prize - Andy Doyle 36 points
  • Best Front 9 - Clive Ackerman 20 points
  • Best Back 9 - Joe Gallagher 22 points
  • Nearest the Pin - Mike Steer
  • Longest Drive - Mike Steer

UIGS 2021 Championships

Interested in joining our society outings?

Our Society has recently been in EMail correspondence with the UIGS concerning the controversy in awarding the winning team. At first Luton was awarded the winning team. However subsequently the Cleveland Team found a missing card which was then used to increase their team score. This change resulted in their score being better than Luton's so they were deemed the winning team.  This matter has caused much bad feeling because many consider the decision was wrong.

We are not participating in this year's championships due to a lack of support.
