The Irish tour to Waterford finally took place on 22 to 28 May 2022. 35 society members joined the tour to Waterford staying 6 nights at The Park Hotel in Dungarvan, conveniently located within walking distance to the town centre and overlooking an estuary where you can spot seals in the morning.
The first round was played at Faithlegg Golf Course, a beautiful parkland course designed by renowned Irish golf course architect Mr. Paddy Merrigan. The course carries Merrigan's familiar stamp of difficulty, undulating greens, water hazards and perfectly placed sand traps, all of which, complete and heighten the challenge which is "Faithlegg". Winner at Faithlegg was John Sheehan scoring an amazing 40 points.
The second round on 24 May was played at Gold Coast GC, just a short distance drive from the hotel. A beautiful championship parkland course with unrivalled views of Dungarvan Bay, the Irish Sea and Helvick Head. Mature tree-lined fairways were cleverly mingled with the long and challenging newer holes, stretching 6,204 metres and bordered by the Atlantic Ocean for 1.5 miles. The greens were fast and challenging. Holes 6, 7 & 9 have wonderful views of a lighthouse right by the sea. Maureen Sullivan was the winner on the day scoring 39 points. Gold Coast GC hosted an Open competition on the same day which several members of the society have entered. It was with delight that the open was won by our society member Betty Yue.
Day 3 was the highlight of the tour playing at the 2022 Irish Open course Mount Juliet, designed by Jack Nicklaus. Thanks to Angela Murphy, the society was lucky to have the opportunity to play this course in top condition before the Irish Open. The 11th, 13th and 14th holes were among the course's most beautiful holes to look at, but the greens were heavily guarded by bunkers and water. The roughs were proved to be tough and challenging to hit out as they were kept long for the Irish Open! The club house was beautiful, serving high quality food. A wonderful experience for years to remember. Winner of the day was Kieran Guthrie scoring 36 points on a very challenging course.
A little ferry ride on day 4 took us to the beautiful Waterford Castle GC, Ireland’s only true island golf course, surrounded by the River Suir and accessible by complimentary car ferry. The 18-hole par 72 Des Smyth designed course is located on a 310-acre private island. The 6814-yard course covers an area of over 200 acres on the Island Resort, with parkland and woodland areas including numerous scenic and strategically challenging features as well as wildlife spotting. Peter Argue was winner of the day scoring an incredible 41 points.
A short coach ride from the hotel took us to Dungarvan GC, Angela Murphy's home course, where we played our final round. The sun was shining for us on this day playing this beautiful parkland course with wonder views of Dungarvan Bay, the Waterford Greenway which set against the backdrop of the Comeragh mountains. Joe Campbell was winner of the last round.
The tour was celebrated with a gala dinner at the hotel on the final day with prize presentations, live music and dancing. Kieran Guthrie and Pat McNicholas also took on the stage singing at the dinner. Joe Campbell won the overall prize with Kieran Guthrie as runner up.
Last but not least, the society would like to thank Angela Murphy for organising the tour which gave members a great opportunity to visit her beautiful hometown and played some fantastic golf courses. Special thanks also to Maureen Sullivan, Terry Kirk and Ray Davis supporting the organisation.

This was another very successful tour blessed with good weather from start to finish. Careful consideration and planning had been given to all the courses which provided a variety of challenges to match anything that the great game of golf has to offer. As one member commented " the trip was fabulous and we were very lucky with the weather"
It was good to play Cairndhu, Joe's home course whose facilities were first class. We believe it is the first tour that a member, Brendan Moore had a Hole in One playing the 3rd hole at Ballycastle. The club will enter his name on the Hole in One Board and give him a certificate.
The results are as follows:
Tour Championship
1. Joe Campbell
2. Betty Yue
3. Maureen Sullivan
Martin Diggins Trophy
1. Joe Campbell & Palita Moore
2. Betty Yue & Gerry Fitzgerald
Matt Mooney Cup - Last Day Winner
Betty Yue
Jim Ryan Throphy - Over 70's winner
Peter McGeever
The 2018 Irish tour was based in Co. Clare for the first time, and orchestrated by society captain Ross O'Malley, and was a great success. Ross had worked very hard to ensure everything ran smoothly, and was clearly delighted and proud to welcome the society to his home county. Apart from some drizzly rain on the first day, we were blessed with glorious weather , and golf courses in pristine condition. An average of almost 40 players played each day, and it was great that some members now based in Ireland came and joined us. We were based at the Woodstock hotel in Ennis, where we were warmly welcomed, well fed and watered, and where at the usual last night dinner and 'knees up, we were once again entertained by our old friend Sean Kelly. Next year all roads will lead to Antrim. (Report copyright by our Chairman)

The tour to Galway, which was arranged by the Captain, Kieran Guthrie was a great success . The golf courses were all different , some in the country others by the sea but all with first class facilities . The hotel was in an excellent location and was excellent
The highlight of the week was playing at the Galway Golf Club where the name of O'Connor is inextricably linked with Irish golfing circles. Both Christy Snr & Jnr honed their skills at this club to become very successful Ryder Cup men and winning many major championships. Chisty Snr. was the Assistant Professional at the Club from 1947 to 1949 .
We were very honoured to have Jimmy Duggan join us for the week. As most of you will know, he is a famous Gaelic footballer who was a member of the Galway Senior inter-county team from 1966 to 1978. He played in the winning side in 1966 and was runner up on three other occasions.
He is now very involved with various aspects of developing golf in Galway and in particular with the the Galway Golf Club. Some of us were privileged to play with him and receive some expert tuition.
